Mission Journey to Cuba - Part 3

The church which was organized by Abraham Garcia

Abraham and Anilla Garcia

Rejoice and be glad, Jesus’ Church is growing in Las Tunas!

Dear MASA-Friends,

This is the third and last report of my missionary trip to Cuba in 2010.

We spent almost two days in the city and region of Las Tunas. It has been an amazing time for us; these days were full of dialogues and encounters. In the same way the meeting with the staff, the missionaries and a church service in the village of Columbia, located 50 km away. Marcos Rivero has been a MASA-Missionary since 2009. He is responsible for the missionaries and staff training with a church planting vision. Marcos reported on the joyful success in the hole region and „God’s working“. Within 100 years the Baptist churches had planted 6 new local churches with a total of 500 members in this region. In the last 3 years, especially in 2009, further 15 new churches were set up and the number of members increased up to 1,500. Most of them are small congregations which get together in family homes, small chapels or even under a mango tree. They bear a great love to the Word of God and are highly engaged evangelising the people around them. In spite of small beginnings, they comply with the rules for church planting and structures: 30 members at least, one leader team, who is bound to regular trainings, a single missionary or a married-couple missionary as well as a work plan which gives priority to evangelisation and staff training. We were very impressed about the Bible knowledge of these young Christians. Most of them have been converted for one or two years, but, while Daniel was preaching and referring to different texts, they repeated after him without looking in their Bibles. I am convinced that their bible knowledge and their great love to the Word of God give them spiritual strength and enhance church growing.

We also heard a set of witnesses from people who gave their lives to Jesus and now they are being engaged in missionary work. I shall mention of one of them: Abraham Antonio García. He was only 7 years old when his life was given to the demons in spiritistic centres. Later, he was the leader of the biggest spiritistic centre for 20 years. About two years ago, he was reached with the Gospel, and he gave his life to Jesus. Now he is a missionary and leader of one of the new churches together with his wife Arenilla. Immediately after their conversion they began to talk about Jesus with the people who where involved with them in Satanism, telling them that they also can be set free. Through their persuasive witness and preaching the Gospel, 32 people from the spiritism centre have already converted and faithfully take part in the church. This is one of many witnesses that we have heard and seen in this region, which deeply touched our hearts. We are absolutely convinced that we will continue supporting and encouraging Marcos Rivero by providing training courses for missionaries and members of staff and assistance with the church planting projects in this region. For that, we kindly ask you for intercession and support.

Finally, at the end of our journey, we participated in a wonderful and joyful church service on Palm Sunday at Daniel González’s church. Together with 450 brothers and sisters we could celebrate our King Jesus. This church is also completely breaking up, it organises many house fellowships and seeks to win the quarter „Santos Suarez“ in Havana (90,000 habitants) for Jesus. These projects have also been supported by MASA since 2009.

As we started our trip back home, we were affected by the misery of the people we have met, but, at the same time, full of joy for God’s missionary work through his people in Cuba. As I had already said, we are convinced that the projects which have been sponsored and supported by MASA are very successful. We simply have wonderful missionaries, people who are the right staff, at the right time, at the right place. Struggles and challenges are often huge and very difficult, but the victory of our Lord is obvious. Nothing else can give more pleasure to a missionary leader.

I invite you to rejoice with us and celebrate God for this!

In Jesus’ love united,

Pastor Carlos Waldow
